Impasto is derived from Italian word pasta meaning paste. Thick oil paints are applied using brush or knife such that the strokes are distinctly visible and are rising from the canvas.
Painters have used this technique to depict clothes or jewellery to some creating rich impasto textures. Nature or portraits, all can be created using the techniques. Famous painters like Rembrandt, Vincent van Gogh and Vermeer have used them extensively in their paintings.
Impasto paintings can be used to play with light, depth and texture. The paintings though not 3D paintings in real sense but still are not limited to the canvas.
